Pool Acid Calculator Australia: How Much Acid to Lower pH

Work out how much muriatic (hydrochloric) acid or pH decreaser to add, then use the free calculator for an exact dose based on your pool volume.

Why Lower Pool pH?

High pH (above 7.6) causes several problems:

  • Reduces chlorine effectiveness
  • Causes scaling and cloudy water
  • Eye and skin irritation
  • Reduced sanitization

Ideal pH range is 7.2-7.6. Use PoolCalculator.com.au to check if your pH needs adjustment.

Step 1: Test Current pH Level

Use a pool test kit or test strips to measure current pH. Read our guide on how to read test strips for accurate results.

Ideal pH: 7.2-7.6
Action needed if: pH is above 7.6

Step 2: Pool Acid Dose Chart

Use this chart as a starting point, then confirm with PoolCalculator.com.au:

Pool volumeAcid to lower pH by ~0.1Max per dose
30,000 L~30 ml300 ml
50,000 L~50 ml500 ml
75,000 L~75 ml500 ml
100,000 L~100 ml500 ml

Never add more than 500 ml at a time. Make multiple small adjustments if pH is very high, and retest after 24 hours.

Step 3: Safety First

Safety Equipment Required:

  • Protective gloves (chemical-resistant)
  • Safety goggles
  • Well-ventilated area
  • Keep away from children and pets

⚠️ Always add acid to water, NEVER water to acid!

Step 4: Add Acid to Pool

  1. Turn on pool pump - Ensure circulation is running
  2. Pour slowly - Add muriatic acid to deep end of pool
  3. Walk around perimeter - Distribute evenly while pouring
  4. Never pour into skimmer - This can damage equipment
  5. Never mix chemicals - Add acid separately from other chemicals

Step 5: Run Pool Pump

Run pool pump for 4-6 hours to ensure proper circulation and mixing throughout the pool.

Step 6: Retest After 24 Hours

Wait 24 hours, then retest pH. If still high, make another small adjustment. Don't rush - multiple small adjustments are safer than one large one.

What Causes High pH?

Common Causes:

  • High Total Alkalinity
  • Aeration (waterfalls, fountains)
  • Certain chlorine tablets
  • Hard water
  • High bather load

Prevention:

  • Maintain proper TA (80-120 ppm)
  • Limit aeration when not needed
  • Test pH weekly
  • Balance chemistry regularly
