Pool Pump Buying Guide Australia: Sizing & Energy Use
Choose a pool pump by flow, plumbing and running cost. Compare above-ground, self-priming and two-speed picks, plus replacement basket options.

Pick by setup: match an above-ground filter pump to the pool and hoses, or choose an in-ground replacement by its pump curve, plumbing and equipment flow limits.
Size for your plumbing
Start with pool volume, then check the flow required by your filter, chlorinator and heater. Horsepower alone cannot tell you whether a pump suits the system. Ask the supplier for the pump curve at your installation head and check every component's permitted flow.
For a calculation example, moving 40,000 litres in 8 hours requires 5,000 L/h. That is a flow calculation, not a universal filtration schedule. Pipe resistance, equipment and actual operating conditions affect delivered flow. Start with the pool volume guide.
Picks by setup
Small above-ground setup: Bestway 3028L filter pump. The catalogue lists 3,028 L/h. Match pool size, hose fittings and the manufacturer's operating requirements; do not treat it as a replacement for any in-ground pump.
Self-priming shortlist: TDKMAN 2.65HP. Listed at 33,600 L/h, 240V and for pools up to 100,000 litres. That headline flow is not guaranteed through your plumbing. Confirm the pump curve and filter limits before buying; a large capacity is not a reason to oversize.
Spa or small-pool replacement: Australian Leisure Time 2.5HP two-speed pump. The listing identifies an LX WP250-II replacement. Check connections, mounting and controls against the existing installation. Two-speed does not mean continuously variable speed.
1200W option: Giantz. The catalogue gives power consumption but no flow curve. Get that missing information before selecting it for a filtration system. A low purchase price does not establish a low running cost.
Self-priming still needs correct setup
Follow the model manual for filling the strainer, valve positions and startup. Self-priming is not permission to run dry. If it will not prime, switch it off and investigate water level, blockages and air leaks before continuing.
Work out electricity use
Energy in kWh = input power in kW × hours. At a constant 1.2 kW, an 8-hour day uses 9.6 kWh. At an illustrative tariff of $0.30/kWh, that is $2.88 per day. Use your own tariff and measured consumption; this is not a product savings claim.
Compare the Energy Rating label and running costs when available. The Australian Government pool-pump guide explains why speed control and suitable sizing matter. Our catalogue does not provide efficiency ratings for these picks, so we cannot rank their energy savings.
Use the maintenance cost guide to budget. Set operating hours to meet filtration and sanitiser needs, then compare electricity plans rather than simply cutting runtime.
Basket damaged, pump still working?
An Onga Leisuretime LTP/Pantera PPP basket or a compatible WhisperFlo/IntelliFlo basket may be the part you need. Match the exact pump model and basket dimensions. These are replacement baskets, not complete pumps.
