Salt Chlorinator Buying Guide Australia: Systems & Replacement Cells
Choose an above-ground salt chlorinator or a replacement Astral or Zodiac cell. Compare pool sizing, chlorine output and compatibility before buying.

Cell or complete system?
A replacement cell is for an existing compatible chlorinator. It does not replace the controller or turn a chlorine pool into a saltwater pool by itself. A complete system is the starting point for a new installation, but still needs compatible circulation equipment.
Above-ground system picks
Intex Krystal Clear: our catalogue lists 12 g/h chlorine output and an above-ground pool capacity up to 56,800 litres. Bestway Hydrogenic: the listed output is 6 g/h, with capacity up to 26,498 litres and self-cleaning operation.
Use those capacities as shortlist limits, not a promise of enough chlorine in every pool. Ask the supplier to confirm suitability for your volume, summer water temperature, sun exposure and swimming load. Check required pump flow, hose fittings and operating salt range in the model manual.
Size by output as well as litres
Start with the pool volume guide. Then compare chlorine output in grams per hour and the hours the system can actually operate with water flowing.
For example, 12 g/h running at full output for 8 hours produces a nominal 96 g of chlorine; 6 g/h over the same period produces 48 g. Those are arithmetic examples, not recommended run times or doses. Test free chlorine to see whether output meets demand.
Use the salt calculator with the target in your chlorinator manual. Adding extra salt is not a substitute for adequate chlorine production.
Replacement cell picks
Astral Hurlcon VX9: the listed genuine replacement includes housing. Zodiac TRi/XO: choose the matching Mid or Large cell for the existing system. Zodiac Clearwater Ei25: the listed replacement has 25 g/h output capacity.
Read the controller label and record the existing cell part number before ordering. Match connectors, housing and model compatibility with the supplier. A higher-output cell is not automatically an upgrade for a smaller controller.
Before replacing a cell
Check salt, water flow, controller settings and any fault code against the manual. Inspect for scale and clean only as instructed. Persistent low chlorine can also involve water balance or demand; use the water testing guide before assuming the cell has failed.
